OCT. 3 ,02
Update, DICK BROWN , CARTHAGE , TX.:
Dick is in ICU at East Texas Medical Center. His blood count is low again. He was given 2 pints of blood and was put in ICU so he could be monitored by a nurse. Dick will probably be in the hospital for a few days so they can find out what is causing his blood loss.

They found that Dick is bleeding internally and are giving him more units of blood. As I spoke with Jan just now she said they were waiting for ambulance to take Dick to Highland Park in Bossier where they will do an endioscope (sp) to find and stop the internal bleeding.

Doc Hamilton , from Bowling Green Ky.(formerly from Austin , Tx.) just got home from surgery after about a week in Vanderbilt Univ. Medical Ctr. in Nashville TN. His oral surgeon in Bowling Green had cut a little carcinoma out from under his tongue (back there where he'd chinned the dern fiddle for 30 years) but wanted to be sure she got it all. They sliced his neck took out some lymph nodes and a salivary gland, and some more tissue around where the original tumor was.

From Doc

First reports are good, no more cancer cells anywhere. We're waiting for the final pathology report now. Needless to say, my fiddle days are over, but I'm having fun picking bass with some folks up here, and of course, singing with my darling.

John Hartford 1937-2001

John Hartford passed away at 5pm, June 4, 2001. His last performance was April 7, 2001 at the Old Settler's Music Festival in Dripping Springs, Texas. We are saddened greatly by the loss. At around 5:00 p.m. , June 4th, 2001, after a long struggle with cancer, John Hartford passed away at his home in Madison, TN For the last several weeks, John had been joined at his home by his family and friends telling stories and reliving a wonderful life. He enjoyed having some of his musical heroes play old songs and recount stories of "show business". Although he could no longer join in, he delighted in listening to the music that he so dearly loved and spent a lifetime creating. What more can you say about a man who touched so many. Rest in peace, John Hartford.
